Breathing Nanoplastics Shrinks Your Spleen and Wrecks Immunity

Mice that breathed in polystyrene nanoplastics for just two weeks had shrunken spleens and their immune systems went haywire.
Two Weeks of Breathing Plastic
Researchers exposed mice to 100-nanometer polystyrene particles through inhalation for one to two weeks to simulate real-world airborne exposure. The results hit the spleen hard, according to a 2026 study in Ecotoxicol Environ Saf.
The spleen shrank. Immune cells became imbalanced. The nanoplastics blocked the cell cycle by suppressing a protein called Cdk1 and interfering with the p53 pathway, which handles DNA repair. When DNA repair shuts down and cells can't divide properly, the organ ages and stops working right.
Your Spleen Runs Your Immune System
The spleen filters blood and manages immune responses. Spleen atrophy and cell senescence (premature aging) mean your body's ability to fight infections and clear out damaged cells takes a direct hit.
Nanoplastics are already being found in indoor air, especially in homes with synthetic carpets, plastic furniture, and synthetic clothing. Every breath brings in tiny plastic particles.
What You Can Do
Use a HEPA air purifier indoors. Vacuum regularly with a HEPA-filter vacuum. Choose natural fiber textiles when you can. Ventilate your home. And browse non-toxic home essentials for alternatives that shed fewer plastic particles.
