Artificial Sweeteners Are Linked to Male Infertility

Artificial sweeteners damage male fertility by targeting a specific receptor critical for sperm production. The "zero calorie" label comes with a hidden reproductive cost.
What the Study Found
A 2026 study used network toxicology and experimental evidence to show that artificial sweeteners cause male infertility by targeting FGFR1, a receptor involved in cell growth and sperm development. The study identified this as the critical molecular target through which sweeteners impair male reproductive function.
Male fertility has been declining globally for decades. Sperm counts are down over 50%. Artificial sweeteners, consumed daily by millions, may be one of the environmental factors driving this decline.
What You Can Do
If you're trying to conceive or care about long-term fertility, ditch artificial sweeteners. Check labels for aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame-K, and saccharin. Drink water instead of diet beverages.
