Bisphenol S (BPS) was supposed to be the safe alternative to BPA. It's not. A new review says it's neurotoxic, meaning it damages your brain and nervous system.
What the Review Found
A 2026 review in Molecular Neurobiology pulled together the evidence on BPS and neurological health. The conclusion: BPS causes neurotoxicity through multiple mechanisms. It damages brain cells, disrupts neurotransmitter systems, and triggers oxidative stress and inflammation in the nervous system.
BPS was introduced as a "safer" substitute after BPA got phased out of many products. It's now in thermal receipt paper, food can linings, and plastics labeled "BPA-free." But it has a similar chemical structure to BPA and acts on the body in similar ways.
Your Brain on BPS
The review found that BPS exposure is linked to impaired brain development, altered behavior, and reduced cognitive function. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and accumulates in brain tissue. Kids and developing fetuses are the most vulnerable.
What You Can Do
Avoid handling thermal receipts. Choose fresh foods over canned. Don't trust "BPA-free" as a safety guarantee. Use glass and stainless steel for food and drinks. The only safe bisphenol is no bisphenol.
