Bisphenols and Parabens Are in the Dirt Outside

You don't even have to go inside to be exposed to bisphenols and parabens. They're in the soil and dust right outside your door.
Chemicals Found in City Soil and Dust
A 2026 study in Environ Monit Assess tested soils and outdoor dust from a major metropolitan area in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, China. They detected bisphenols (BPs) and parabens across the samples.
Bisphenols are endocrine disruptors found in plastic containers, receipt paper, and can linings. Parabens are preservatives used in cosmetics, lotions, and personal care products. Both mimic hormones in the body. And both are now showing up in the environment around us.
How Outdoor Contamination Reaches You
Outdoor dust gets tracked into your home on shoes and clothing. Kids play in dirt. Wind carries contaminated dust through open windows. The study assessed human exposure risks and found that even outdoor contact creates a pathway for these chemicals to get into your body.
The researchers noted that bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF), the "safe" replacements for BPA, were among the chemicals detected. So switching to "BPA-free" products doesn't necessarily solve the problem.
What You Can Do
Take shoes off at the door. Wet-mop floors instead of dry sweeping (it kicks up less dust). Choose personal care products free of parabens. And use glass or stainless steel instead of plastic for food storage. Start with non-toxic home essentials to reduce your exposure.
