BPA and phthalates are changing how blood vessels develop in the placenta, the organ that feeds your baby.
Chemical Exposure Alters Placental Blood Vessel Growth
A 2026 study in Placenta measured placental angiogenic biomarkers in relation to prenatal bisphenol and phthalate exposure. Angiogenic biomarkers tell us how blood vessels are growing. The study found that chemical exposure altered these markers, suggesting that BPA and phthalates disrupt how the placenta builds its blood supply.
The placenta depends on healthy blood vessel growth to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the fetus. Disrupting this process can lead to complications like preeclampsia, growth restriction, and stillbirth.
What You Can Do
Reduce bisphenol and phthalate exposure during pregnancy. Avoid plastic food containers. Choose fragrance-free products. Skip canned foods. Browse non-toxic baby products for a safer pregnancy.
