BPA, phthalates, and parabens change how your platelet DNA works, and those changes are linked to type 2 diabetes.

Chemical Exposure Alters Your DNA Methylation

A 2026 study in Ecotoxicol Environ Saf found that exposure to bisphenols, phthalates, and parabens alters platelet mitochondrial DNA methylation, and this mediates the pathway to type 2 diabetes. The chemicals change how genes in your blood cells are switched on and off, pushing your metabolism toward diabetes.

All three chemical classes are endocrine disruptors found in everyday products: plastic containers, personal care products, canned food linings, and fragrances.

What You Can Do

Reduce exposure to all three simultaneously. Go plastic-free for food storage. Choose paraben-free personal care products. Avoid fragranced products. Browse non-toxic home essentials for cleaner alternatives.
