Parabens are in shampoo, lotion, makeup, and body wash. If you're pregnant, they're probably in your bloodstream. A 2026 study in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety found that butylparaben exposure in early pregnancy disrupts the placenta's ability to make estrogen, causing fetal growth restriction.

What Researchers Found

Scientists from Fudan University analyzed blood samples from 20 women with fetal growth restriction (FGR) and 20 healthy controls. Women with FGR had significantly higher paraben levels in the first trimester, along with disrupted estrogen metabolism. In mouse studies, gestational butylparaben exposure caused a 28% decrease in fetal weight and placental damage.

The mechanism: butylparaben suppresses the enzyme CYP19A1 (aromatase) in placental cells by 35 to 68%. This enzyme converts androgens to estrogen. Without it, estrogen levels drop, and the placenta can't support healthy fetal growth.

What to Do About It

Parabens are listed on labels as methylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben, or propylparaben. They preserve cosmetics and personal care products. Most people absorb them through skin. During pregnancy, that absorption crosses the placenta.

Check every product you use on your body. Choose paraben-free skincare and look for products made with simpler, verifiable ingredients. For your baby, browse non-toxic baby products with clean ingredient lists. And swap any household products that list parabens with non-toxic home essentials.
