Cadmium Is Scarring Your Kidneys From the Inside

Cadmium exposure causes renal fibrosis, scarring inside your kidneys that replaces healthy tissue with stiff, non-functional scar tissue.

How Cadmium Scars the Kidneys

A 2026 study in Sci Rep identified the molecular pathway: cadmium inhibits a specific signaling chain (hsa_circ_0075684/miR-363-3p/KLF4) that normally keeps kidney tissue healthy. When cadmium blocks this pathway, fibrosis kicks in. Healthy kidney tissue gets replaced by scar tissue that can't filter blood.

Kidney fibrosis is a one-way street. Once the scarring starts, it doesn't reverse. It progresses toward chronic kidney disease and eventually kidney failure.

Your Daily Cadmium Dose

Cadmium accumulates from cigarette smoke, rice, cocoa, leafy vegetables, seafood, and contaminated water. It builds up in the kidneys over decades. Your body has no efficient way to get rid of it. The half-life of cadmium in the body is 10 to 30 years.

Every bit of cadmium you absorb today will still be damaging your kidneys a decade from now.

What You Can Do

Don't smoke. Rinse rice thoroughly before cooking. Eat a varied diet. Test your water if you're on well water. Choose organic produce when possible. Explore non-toxic home essentials for safer products in your daily routine.
