The Data Is In
Using chemical hair straighteners and relaxers may be significantly more dangerous than we thought. A 2026 study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute analyzed data from over 46,000 women and found a clear link between these products and several non-reproductive cancers. The findings are specific and concerning.
What the Study Found
Over a median follow-up of 13.1 years, researchers observed that women who used these chemical products faced a higher incidence of specific cancers. The hazard ratio for pancreatic cancer was 2.66. For thyroid cancer, it was 1.71, and for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, it was 1.62.
These products often contain ingredients that are genotoxic, meaning they can damage your DNA. The study suggests that even without a clear dose-response relationship, the presence of these chemicals in your routine is associated with these elevated risks.
Take Control of Your Routine
You don't have to accept these risks as the cost of beauty or personal care. Start by auditing the products in your bathroom cabinet. Look for ingredient labels that avoid harsh chemical relaxers and synthetic straighteners. If you are looking to audit your entire space, we have curated a selection of non-toxic home alternatives that prioritize your health over industry convenience. It is time to stop using products that compromise your long-term well-being.
