Chemical Mixtures in Pregnancy Disrupt Essential Metabolism

Pregnant women carry mixtures of environmental pollutants that disrupt amino acid and fatty acid metabolism during early pregnancy. The chemicals alter the building blocks that both mother and baby need.
What the Study Found
A 2026 nontargeted screening study identified pollutant mixtures in early pregnancy and linked them to perturbations in amino acid and fatty acid metabolic pathways. These aren't single chemical effects. They're mixture effects from the real-world cocktail of chemicals pregnant women carry.
Amino acids build proteins for fetal development. Fatty acids build brain tissue and cell membranes. Disrupting both during early pregnancy can affect everything from organ formation to brain development.
What You Can Do
Reduce chemical exposure before and during pregnancy. Use glass for food storage. Eat organic. Filter water. Choose fragrance-free, paraben-free personal care products.
