Some paper diapers exceed safety thresholds for chemical exposure. A 2026 study published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials found that the risk is driven primarily by synthetic antioxidants used in the manufacturing process.

Researchers screened 92 chemicals in personal hygiene products, including phthalate esters (PAEs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs). While phthalates are often the focus of safety concerns, this study revealed that synthetic antioxidants like AO1135 and 2,4-di-tert-butyl-phenol (DBP) were present at significantly higher concentrations. In some diaper samples, the hazard index exceeded 1, indicating a level of risk that should not be ignored for vulnerable infants.

You do not have to accept these chemicals as the standard. When you are looking for non-toxic baby alternatives, prioritize brands that are transparent about their materials and provide third-party testing results. Stop assuming that the default option on the shelf is safe just because it is widely available. Check the labels, demand better transparency, and make the switch to products that prioritize your baby's health over manufacturing convenience.
