Premature babies in the NICU are exposed to DEHP from medical tubing and bags. A new study measured how long it stays in their tiny bodies.
DEHP From Medical Devices
A 2026 study in Curr Res Toxicol determined the half-life of DEHP in premature babies exposed through NICU medical equipment. IV bags, feeding tubes, and blood transfusion lines are often made with PVC plastic containing DEHP. The chemical leaches into fluids that go directly into the baby.
These are the most fragile patients possible: preemies whose organs are still developing. And they're getting continuous phthalate exposure through their medical care.
What You Can Do
If your baby is in the NICU, ask about DEHP-free medical supplies. Many hospitals are switching to alternatives. Advocate for your baby. Browse non-toxic baby products for safer options at home.
