Long-term exposure to DEHP, the phthalate plasticizer in everything from food packaging to vinyl floors, causes structural damage to the uterus. Not temporary irritation. Actual tissue changes visible under a microscope.

What the Study Found

A 2026 study in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology exposed female mice to DEHP over a long period and then examined their uterine tissue. The result: histopathologic alterations, meaning the cell structure of the uterus was visibly damaged and abnormal.

The uterus is essential for fertility and pregnancy. Structural damage to uterine tissue can affect implantation, increase miscarriage risk, and contribute to conditions like endometriosis and infertility.

DEHP Exposure Is Constant

Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate is the most common phthalate in the world. It makes PVC plastic soft and flexible. It's in food containers, cling wrap, medical devices, flooring, and car interiors. It leaches into food (especially fatty food) and into the air of your home.

Most people have measurable levels of DEHP metabolites in their urine. You're exposed to it every single day.

What You Can Do

Stop storing food in plastic containers. Use glass or stainless steel. Never heat food in plastic. Replace vinyl shower curtains and flooring with non-PVC alternatives. Read labels for "phthalate-free" on personal care products.
