The more amalgam dental fillings you have, the higher the mercury concentration in your blood. A study of American adults just confirmed the dose-response relationship.

A Clear Dose-Response in US Adults

A 2026 study in Clin Chem Lab Med measured blood mercury concentrations in American adults and compared them to the number of dental amalgam fillings. The result was a clear pattern: more fillings, more mercury. It's a dose-dependent relationship.

This isn't about fish consumption or industrial exposure. After controlling for other mercury sources, dental amalgam alone was enough to significantly raise blood mercury levels. Your fillings are leaking mercury into your bloodstream every day.

What Mercury Does in Your Body

Mercury is a potent neurotoxin. It accumulates in the brain, kidneys, and liver. Chronic low-level exposure from dental fillings has been linked to neurological symptoms, kidney damage, and immune dysfunction. The effects are slow and subtle, which is why most people never connect their symptoms to their fillings.

What You Can Do

Choose composite fillings for any new dental work. If considering amalgam removal, find a dentist trained in safe removal protocols (SMART certified). Don't have amalgam fillings removed during pregnancy. Browse non-toxic home essentials for other ways to reduce mercury exposure.
