Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals during brain development changes the lipid and metabolite profiles in the hippocampus. Those chemical changes in the brain lead to long-term behavioral problems.

What the Study Found

A 2026 study in Chemical-Biological Interactions exposed developing rats to endocrine disruptors and analyzed their hippocampal tissue. The chemicals altered brain lipids and metabolites that are linked to lasting behavioral impairments.

The hippocampus is the brain's center for learning, memory, and emotional regulation. When its chemical composition is altered during development, the effects show up as behavioral problems that persist into adulthood.

What Are Endocrine Disruptors

BPA, phthalates, PFAS, parabens, and pesticides are all endocrine disruptors. They interfere with hormones that guide brain development. Babies and young children are exposed through food packaging, plastic toys, personal care products, and contaminated water.

What You Can Do

Minimize chemical exposure during pregnancy and early childhood. Use glass for food. Choose fragrance-free, phthalate-free products. Filter water. Keep plastic toys to a minimum.
