Researchers tested human placenta tissue and found bisphenols and parabens inside. The same chemicals in your lotion and food containers are embedded in the organ that feeds your baby.

What the Study Found

A 2026 pilot study in Therapeutic Drug Monitoring analyzed placenta samples for endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). They detected bisphenols and parabens in the tissue. The study also looked at histopathological findings, meaning they examined the tissue under a microscope for signs of damage.

The results showed a relationship between EDC presence and placental tissue changes. The placenta isn't just a passive filter. It's an organ that can be damaged by the chemicals passing through it.

What This Means for Pregnancy

The placenta controls nutrient delivery, waste removal, and hormone production for the developing baby. When EDCs accumulate there, they can disrupt all of these functions. Placental dysfunction is linked to preeclampsia, growth restriction, preterm birth, and stillbirth.

Every product a pregnant woman uses on her skin, every canned food she eats, every plastic container she drinks from is contributing chemicals that end up in the placenta.

What You Can Do

Switch to paraben-free, bisphenol-free personal care products during pregnancy (and before). Avoid canned foods and plastic food containers. Use glass for food storage. Check labels on lotions, shampoos, and cosmetics.
