Your daily environment is showing up in your reproductive system. A 2026 study published in Reprod Biomed Online found that 15 different endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC) were present in the follicular fluid of women undergoing IVF, and they are actively hindering outcomes.

The Chemicals Hiding in Your Routine

Researchers analyzed 176 women and quantified 76 different chemicals. They found that MECPP (a phthalate metabolite) and BHT-COOH were consistently associated with reductions in the number of retrieved oocytes, mature oocytes, and high-quality embryos. These aren't obscure industrial accidents. They are compounds commonly found in plastics, food packaging, and personal care products.

The study, which you can read here, used advanced modeling to show that phthalates and BPS were the dominant contributors to these adverse results. Even more alarming, the data showed that younger women (aged 33 or younger) actually experienced stronger negative associations between these chemical exposures and their IVF outcomes.

Taking Control of Your Exposure

You cannot control everything in the environment, but you can control what you bring into your home. These chemicals leach from plastic storage, synthetic coatings, and low-quality household goods. Start by auditing your kitchen and nursery for plastics and unnecessary synthetic materials. Replacing these items with glass, stainless steel, or solid wood is a concrete step toward reducing your daily chemical load.
