GenX, the PFAS Replacement, Is Toxic to Brain Cells

The chemical industry replaced PFOA (a known toxic PFAS) with GenX (HFPO-DA) and told everyone it was safer. It's not. GenX is neurotoxic. It damages human brain cells.

What the Study Found

A 2026 study in Environmental Science & Technology used human iPSC-derived cortical neurons (brain cells grown from human stem cells) to test GenX toxicity. The result: GenX caused predifferentiation neurotoxicity, meaning it damaged brain cells before they even had a chance to fully develop.

The researchers from Purdue University found that GenX exposure altered how neurons differentiate and develop. These are the cells that form the cortex, the part of your brain responsible for thinking, decision-making, and consciousness.

The "Safer Substitute" Problem

GenX was introduced by Chemours (a DuPont spinoff) as a replacement for PFOA after PFOA was linked to cancer, thyroid disease, and immune problems. But GenX has a similar chemical structure. It persists in the environment. It accumulates in bodies. And now it's been found in drinking water across multiple states.

Replacing one forever chemical with another forever chemical isn't a solution. It's a stalling tactic.

What You Can Do

Filter your water with reverse osmosis or a high-quality activated carbon system. Check if GenX has been detected in your local water supply (it's most common near chemical manufacturing sites). Avoid PFAS-treated products entirely.
