Farmers who work with glyphosate have it in their blood. A new biomonitoring study from South Africa confirms direct human absorption.
Measuring Weed Killer in Human Blood
A 2026 study in Talanta developed and validated a method to measure glyphosate and its metabolites in human serum, then used it to test farmers in intensive farming regions of the Western Cape, South Africa. They found it. Glyphosate and its breakdown products were detectable in farmers' blood.
Glyphosate is the world's most widely used herbicide (the active ingredient in Roundup). If it's in farmers' blood, it's getting absorbed through skin, inhalation, or ingestion during application.
What You Can Do
If you use herbicides, wear protective equipment. Buy organic produce when possible, especially grains. Filter your drinking water. Browse non-toxic kitchen alternatives for a cleaner food prep routine.
