The water under your feet may be putting lead into your child's blood. A county-by-county analysis of the U.S. just connected the dots.
Groundwater Chemistry Predicts Lead in Kids
A 2026 study in Geohealth analyzed groundwater chemistry and children's blood lead levels across U.S. counties. The findings: certain groundwater conditions correlate with higher lead levels in children's blood. The chemistry of the water underground affects what comes out of the tap and ends up in your kid.
Lead in groundwater isn't just about old pipes (though that's part of it). The natural chemistry of the aquifer, including pH, mineral content, and dissolved oxygen, determines how much lead gets mobilized and carried into the water supply.
Why Lead in Kids Is an Emergency
There is no safe level of lead exposure for children. Even low levels cause IQ loss, behavioral problems, attention deficits, and developmental delays. The damage is irreversible. And millions of American children are still being exposed through their drinking water.
What You Can Do
Test your tap water for lead, especially if you have young children. Use a certified lead-removing filter (look for NSF 53 certification). Run the tap for 30 seconds before drinking if it's been sitting. Check out non-toxic home essentials for water filtration solutions.
