Heavy metal exposure in early pregnancy is linked to preterm birth, and the pathway goes through inflammation in the blood.
Metals Trigger Inflammation That Causes Preterm Birth
A 2026 study in J Hazard Mater measured serum metal levels in early pregnancy and found associations with preterm birth. The mechanism: metals cause changes in inflammatory blood cell parameters that mediate the pathway to early delivery.
The metals cause inflammation. The inflammation disrupts the biological processes that maintain pregnancy. The result: the baby comes too early. Preterm birth is the #1 cause of newborn death worldwide.
What You Can Do
Test your water for heavy metals. Filter if needed. Eat a varied diet. Take prenatal vitamins. Avoid known metal sources during pregnancy. Browse non-toxic baby products to protect your pregnancy.
