An analysis of 386 alternative medicine products that caused liver injury found heavy metal contamination, hidden pharmaceutical drugs, and undisclosed animal ingredients.

What's Really in Your Supplements

A 2026 study in Front Gastroenterol analyzed hundreds of supplement products implicated in liver injury. The findings are ugly: many contained heavy metals like lead, mercury, and arsenic. Others had pharmaceutical drugs mixed in that weren't listed on the label. Some had undisclosed animal content.

These aren't random products from sketchy websites. They're alternative medicinal products that people buy to improve their health. Instead, they're poisoning their livers.

What You Can Do

Buy supplements only from brands that do third-party testing and publish results. Look for USP, NSF, or ConsumerLab certifications. Be suspicious of products from unregulated markets. Talk to your doctor before taking herbal products. Browse non-toxic home essentials for verified clean products.
