When researchers went back and re-analyzed stored urine samples from 398 Korean adults, they found 45 chemicals nobody had been looking for. Including ones that aren't even being monitored yet.
What They Found
A 2026 study in Environ Res used advanced screening techniques on archived urine from the Korean National Environmental Health Survey. Instead of just testing for the usual suspects, they searched for anything that showed up.
The results: 24 parent compounds and 10 metabolites from personal care products, pharmaceuticals, mycotoxins, pesticides, emerging bisphenols, and tobacco products. Many of these chemicals aren't part of standard biomonitoring panels.
Chemicals Nobody Was Tracking
Several contaminants popped up for the first time. Sterigmatocystin and zearalenone, both toxic mycotoxins. Bisphenol E, a potential BPA replacement that's quietly showing up in people's bodies. And a metabolite of the pesticide pirimiphos-methyl.
UV filters and parabens from personal care products were detected frequently. These come from sunscreens, lotions, and cosmetics you put on your skin every day.
What This Means for You
Companies swap out banned chemicals for "safer" alternatives that haven't been studied yet. Bisphenol E replacing BPA is a perfect example. The old chemical gets phased out, the new one slides in, and nobody's testing for it.
Read ingredient labels. Choose personal care products without parabens and chemical UV filters. Pick BPA-free products that actually name what they use instead. Explore non-toxic home essentials for cleaner everyday alternatives.
