Humidifier Disinfectants Are Destroying People's Lungs

People added disinfectant to their humidifiers thinking it would keep the air clean. Instead, it gave them lung disease. And the damage didn't show up right away.

What the Study Found

A 2026 study in Ecotoxicol Environ Saf followed a cohort of health damage reporters in South Korea who were exposed to humidifier disinfectant chemicals. The study found a clear association between humidifier disinfectant exposure and respiratory diseases. Critically, the study also identified a latency period, meaning the lung damage showed up well after the exposure.

South Korea already experienced a national crisis over humidifier disinfectants. Hundreds of people died and thousands were sickened after using products containing chemicals like PHMG (polyhexamethylene guanidine) in their humidifiers. The chemicals were aerosolized and breathed directly into the lungs.

Why the Delay Matters

The latency finding is the scary part. You could be using a product right now, feel fine, and not develop symptoms for years. By the time you notice something's wrong, the damage is already done.

What You Can Do

Never add disinfectants, essential oils, or cleaning chemicals to a humidifier. Use distilled water and clean it regularly with plain vinegar. If a product tells you to add it to your humidifier water, be very skeptical.
