Formaldehyde in Schools Puts Kids at Cancer Risk

Formaldehyde levels inside European schools are high enough to increase cancer risk in 14 out of 17 countries studied. Kids are breathing this in every day.

Indoor Air Is Worse Than Outdoor

Researchers assessed 9 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in educational buildings across 17 EU countries. Indoor VOC concentrations are typically 2 to 5 times higher than outdoors, and kids spend a huge chunk of their day in these buildings, according to a 2026 study in Sci Rep.

Formaldehyde was the biggest problem. It exceeded safe levels for respiratory damage, neurological effects, and cancer risk in schools across 14 of the 17 countries. Benzene exposure posed neurological risk in 4 countries.

Where These Chemicals Come From

VOCs come from building materials, furniture, cleaning products, paints, and flooring. Formaldehyde is released by pressed-wood products like particleboard and MDF, which are cheap and common in school furniture. These chemicals off-gas constantly in poorly ventilated indoor spaces.

What You Can Do

Push for better ventilation in your children's school. At home, avoid pressed-wood furniture or seal it with low-VOC finishes. Choose solid wood or metal. Open windows regularly. And explore non-toxic home essentials for cleaner indoor air.
