Your baby's first bowel movement contains heavy metals. They were transferred from you during pregnancy.
Metals in Meconium
A 2026 study in Toxics measured metals in newborn meconium and identified maternal and newborn factors associated with higher levels. Meconium accumulates everything the fetus was exposed to during pregnancy, making it a biomarker of prenatal chemical exposure.
What You Can Do
Reduce metal exposure during pregnancy. Filter water. Eat varied foods. Avoid high-mercury fish. Browse non-toxic baby products.
