Microplastics Are Affecting How Children Grow

Microplastic exposure in early life is changing how children physically develop. And boys and girls are affected differently.

Early Exposure, Altered Growth

A 2026 study in Environ Int examined children in China and found sex-specific associations between early-life microplastic exposure and physical development outcomes, including BMI z-scores.

That means the plastic particles children encounter in their first years of life are measurably changing their body composition and growth trajectories.

Boys and Girls Respond Differently

The sex-specific pattern fits what we know about endocrine disruption. Microplastics carry chemicals that mimic or block hormones. Since boys and girls have different hormone profiles during development, the same exposure can push them in different directions.

Where Early Microplastic Exposure Comes From

Babies encounter microplastics from formula preparation in plastic bottles, teething on plastic toys, crawling on synthetic carpets, and breathing indoor dust containing plastic fibers. Breast milk itself has been found to contain microplastics.

What Parents Can Do

Use glass bottles for formula. Choose wooden or silicone toys over plastic. Vacuum with a HEPA filter. Reduce plastic in your kitchen. And switch to non-toxic baby products to minimize your child's microplastic exposure during critical growth periods.

Also see glass food storage for safer alternatives.
