Microplastics May Be Behind Your Skin Problems

That stubborn eczema or mystery rash? Microplastics in your gut might be triggering it.

The Gut-Skin Connection

A 2026 review in J Transl Med explored how microplastics cause skin diseases through something called the gut-skin axis. Here's the short version: microplastics get into your digestive system, damage your gut lining, disrupt your gut bacteria, trigger inflammation, and that inflammation shows up on your skin.

Microplastics enter your body through food, water, and air. Once in the gut, they can cause intestinal barrier damage, immune dysregulation, and chronic low-level inflammation. Your gut and your skin are connected through immune signaling. When the gut is inflamed, the skin often follows.

What Skin Conditions Are Linked?

The review discusses connections to eczema, dermatitis, and other inflammatory skin conditions. The mechanism involves microplastics disrupting the gut microbiome, which then sends inflammatory signals throughout the body. Your skin, as the largest organ, catches the fallout.

If you've been treating skin problems topically without results, the root cause might be deeper, literally in your gut.

What You Can Do

Reduce your microplastic intake: avoid plastic food containers, don't heat food in plastic, drink filtered water, and choose natural fiber clothing. Supporting gut health with whole foods and fermented foods may also help. Browse non-toxic home essentials for plastic-free swaps around the house.
