Researchers analyzed human stool samples and found microplastic particles in them. Confirmed: you're eating plastic, and it's passing through your entire digestive system.
What the Study Found
A 2026 observational study detected and characterized microplastic particles in human stool. The study identified different polymer types and particle sizes, confirming that microplastics from food, water, and packaging are making it through the entire gastrointestinal tract.
The fact that they show up in stool means they traveled through your mouth, stomach, and intestines. Along the way, they interacted with gut tissue, bacteria, and immune cells. Some particles pass through. Others stay behind.
What You Can Do
Reduce plastic in your diet. Filter water. Use glass and stainless steel for food storage. Avoid heating food in plastic. Eat less packaged and processed food.
