Microplastics promote diabetes. But certain food nutrients may fight back by activating your body's defense genes.

Nutrients vs. Plastic-Driven Diabetes

A 2026 study in Nutrients explored the role of food nutrients that target the Nfe2l2 gene (also known as Nrf2) in counteracting the diabetic effects of micro- and nanoplastics. Nfe2l2 is a master switch for antioxidant defense. When microplastics suppress it, oxidative damage and insulin resistance increase.

Certain foods, including those rich in sulforaphane (broccoli), curcumin (turmeric), and resveratrol (grapes), activate this gene. The study suggests that targeted nutrition could partially offset microplastic damage.

What You Can Do

Eat more cruciferous vegetables, turmeric, and antioxidant-rich foods. Reduce plastic in your diet. Browse non-toxic kitchen alternatives for plastic-free food prep.
