Microplastics don't just irritate your airways. They reprogram your immune cells to make allergic reactions worse.
How Plastic Particles Hijack Your Immune System
A 2026 study in Ecotoxicol Environ Saf found that microplastics alter the function of ILC2 cells (a type of immune cell involved in allergic responses) and disrupt fatty acid metabolism through PPARγ signaling. The result: amplified allergic airway inflammation.
ILC2 cells are key drivers of allergic inflammation in the lungs. When microplastics activate them and change how they process fatty acids, the allergic response gets cranked up. More inflammation. Worse symptoms. Harder-to-control allergies and asthma.
Why Allergies Keep Getting Worse
Allergic diseases have been increasing for decades. We blame pollen, pollution, and modern hygiene. But microplastic exposure is a new variable that fits the timeline. As plastic production has exploded, so have rates of allergies and asthma. The study suggests a direct mechanistic link.
What You Can Do
Reduce airborne microplastics in your home: use HEPA purifiers, choose cotton and linen over polyester, and avoid synthetic carpets. Ventilate your home. Check out non-toxic home essentials to minimize plastic particles in your indoor air.
