Microplastics have been detected in human placentas. The organ that's supposed to protect your baby is contaminated with plastic.

A Call to Action for Perinatal Research

A 2026 paper in Am J Perinatol reviewed the evidence and issued a direct call: we need more research on microplastics in pregnancy, and we need it now. Microplastics have been found in human placental tissue, and we barely understand what that means for developing babies.

The placenta acts as a filter between mother and fetus. It controls what nutrients get through and what toxins get blocked. But microplastics are getting through. And once they're in placental tissue, they could affect nutrient transfer, hormone signaling, and fetal development.

Where the Plastics Come From

Pregnant women inhale microplastics from indoor air, eat them in packaged food, drink them in bottled water, and absorb them from cosmetic products. These particles travel through the bloodstream and accumulate in the placenta.

What You Can Do

Reduce plastic in your daily life, especially during pregnancy. Use glass or stainless steel for food and drinks. Avoid synthetic fragrances and plastic-packaged personal care products. Keep your home well-ventilated and dust-free. Check out non-toxic baby products to protect yourself and your baby.
