Researchers tested every step of Milan's water supply. Microplastics were found at every single stage.
Aquifer to Tap: Plastic All the Way
A 2026 study in J Xenobiot evaluated plastic particles along the entire drinking water supply chain of Milan, Italy, from the underground aquifer to the final tap. They found both micro- and nanoplastics at every point in the system.
Water treatment didn't eliminate the particles. Even groundwater, supposedly protected by layers of rock and soil, contained microplastics. The pipes and infrastructure themselves may also be contributing particles.
What You Can Do
Filter your tap water with a high-quality system. Reverse osmosis removes the most particles. Use glass or stainless steel for storing filtered water. Browse non-toxic home essentials for water filtration solutions.
