Microplastics Are Inflaming Your Airways

You're breathing in microplastics. And they're causing inflammation and damage to the lining of your airways.

Plastic Particles Attack Airway Tissue

A 2026 review in Front Allergy examined how inhaled microplastics cause epithelium inflammation and damage in airway diseases. The epithelium is the thin layer of cells lining your airways. It's your first line of defense against things you breathe in. Microplastics are breaking through it.

When plastic particles land on airway tissue, they trigger an inflammatory response. The epithelial cells become damaged and inflamed. Over time, this can worsen or trigger asthma, chronic bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions.

How You Breathe In Microplastics

Indoor air is loaded with microplastic fibers from synthetic clothing, carpets, upholstered furniture, and plastic products. Every time you shake out laundry, vacuum without a HEPA filter, or sit on a polyester couch, plastic particles go airborne. You inhale them with every breath.

What You Can Do

Use a HEPA air purifier indoors. Vacuum with a HEPA-equipped vacuum. Choose natural fiber clothing and bedding (cotton, linen, wool). Ventilate your home regularly. Browse non-toxic home essentials for plastic-free living options.
