Microplastics Make Your Gut More Vulnerable to Viruses

Long-term microplastic exposure makes your intestines more vulnerable to viral infections. Researchers used lab-grown human intestinal tissue to prove it.
What the Study Found
A 2026 study used human intestinal organoids (miniature lab-grown intestines) to map how prolonged microplastic exposure affects enteric viral infections. The microplastics weakened the intestinal defenses, making it easier for viruses to infect and damage gut tissue.
Enteric viruses (like norovirus and rotavirus) cause food poisoning and gastroenteritis. If microplastics are undermining your gut's ability to fight these infections, the plastic in your food isn't just a toxicology problem. It's an infectious disease problem.
What You Can Do
Reduce microplastic ingestion. Filter water. Use glass for food storage. Avoid plastic packaging. Support gut health with fiber and probiotics to strengthen intestinal defenses.
