Microplastics Make Asthma Worse

If you have asthma, microplastics may be making it worse. A new study showed that plastic exposure amps up airway inflammation in asthma.
Plastic Particles Intensify Asthma Attacks
A 2026 study in Tuberc Respir Dis tested the impact of microplastic exposure on airway inflammation in an acute asthma model in mice. The result: microplastic exposure significantly worsened the inflammatory response in asthmatic airways.
Asthma is already an inflammatory condition. Microplastics add fuel to that fire. The plastic particles appear to amplify the immune response in already-sensitized airways, making attacks more severe.
Asthma Is on the Rise
Asthma rates have been climbing for decades, and nobody fully agrees on why. Indoor air quality is one factor. And indoor air is full of microplastic fibers from synthetic textiles, carpets, and plastic household items. Could rising microplastic exposure be contributing to rising asthma rates? The study suggests that connection is worth taking seriously.
What You Can Do
If you or your kids have asthma, clean up your indoor air. Use HEPA air purifiers. Vacuum with HEPA filters. Choose natural fiber bedding and clothing. Minimize synthetic carpeting. Browse non-toxic home essentials for plastic-free products that protect your air quality.
