MSG During Pregnancy Disrupts Your Baby's Metabolism

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) eaten during pregnancy disrupted insulin and leptin signaling in the brains of male offspring. That means the flavor enhancer in chips, instant noodles, and fast food could be programming your baby for metabolic problems before they're even born.

What the Researchers Found

A 2026 study in the International Journal of Obesity exposed pregnant animals to MSG and then studied the offspring. The results were bad. MSG disrupted leptin and insulin signaling in the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls hunger and metabolism.

On top of that, MSG activated NF-κB and mTOR inflammatory pathways in the offspring's brains. These are the same pathways linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and chronic inflammation.

MSG Is Everywhere

MSG hides under a lot of names on ingredient labels: yeast extract, hydrolyzed protein, "natural flavors." It's in snack foods, soups, frozen meals, and most fast food. If you're pregnant, you're probably eating more of it than you think.

The study makes a direct connection between maternal MSG exposure and metabolic dysfunction in the next generation. The offspring didn't choose to eat MSG. They inherited the damage.

What You Can Do

Read labels. Cook from whole ingredients when you can. Skip the processed snacks and instant meals, especially during pregnancy. Your baby's brain is literally being wired during those nine months.
