Digesting Food Makes Nanoplastics Even More Dangerous

Nanoplastics get more dangerous after your stomach digests them. The digestive process changes the particles in ways that make them better at breaking through your gut barrier and triggering inflammation.
What the Study Found
A 2026 study found that gastrointestinal digestion potentiates nanoplastic-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction. After being processed by stomach acid and digestive enzymes, nanoplastics became better at damaging the gut lining and activating macrophage-driven inflammation.
Your stomach doesn't break down plastic. Instead, digestion alters the surface properties of nanoplastic particles, making them stickier and more reactive with gut tissue.
What You Can Do
Reduce nanoplastic ingestion. Avoid plastic food packaging. Never heat food in plastic. Filter your water. Use glass and stainless steel for food and drinks.
