Nanoplastics Worsen Asthma Through the Gut-Lung Connection

Nanoplastics worsen asthma by disrupting gut bacteria and triggering a chain reaction between your gut and lungs.
What the Study Found
A 2026 study discovered a gut-lung axis mechanism where nanoplastics cause gut microbiota dysbiosis, which triggers PLA2-TRPV1 neuroimmune crosstalk, leading to asthma exacerbation. The plastic particles don't even need to reach the lungs directly. They damage the gut, and the gut sends inflammatory signals to the lungs.
What You Can Do
Reduce nanoplastic ingestion. Filter water. Avoid plastic food containers. Support gut health with fiber and fermented foods. If you have asthma, minimizing plastic exposure may help with symptom control.
