New Furniture Off-Gassing Raises Kids' Pneumonia Risk

Buying new furniture? A 2026 study of nearly 9,000 children found that living with new furniture is linked to higher childhood pneumonia risk β€” especially when parents are also dealing with stress.

What's actually in it

New furniture off-gasses. Particle board, glues, foam, and fabric treatments release formaldehyde, VOCs, and flame retardants into your home air for months after purchase. The off-gassing peaks in the first few weeks and slows down over time, but enclosed spaces trap these chemicals at higher concentrations.

Children breathe faster than adults and spend more time on the floor near furniture. Their developing immune systems are more vulnerable to airborne irritants.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Int J Hyg Environ Health followed 8,689 preschool children in China and tracked exposures from before birth through early childhood. New furniture exposure was independently associated with higher pneumonia rates. Mold and damp bedding were also linked to increased risk.

The study found that parental stress compounded the problem β€” higher stress meant a stronger relationship between these home exposures and illness. Children's immune systems may be more sensitive when the home environment is already stressful.

Air your new furniture out before bringing it inside. Better still, choose solid wood and certified low-VOC options. Open windows when assembling anything with a chemical smell. See non-toxic home essentials for safer furniture choices.
