The chemicals in your shampoo, lotion, and makeup are disrupting thyroid function during pregnancy. Your thyroid controls your baby's brain development. And your beauty routine may be interfering with it.
What the Study Found
A 2026 prospective cohort study in Environment International measured chemicals from personal care products in pregnant women and tracked their thyroid health. The study found associations between personal care product chemical exposure and altered maternal thyroid function.
The researchers also ran a targeted risk assessment for environmental chemicals, confirming that common ingredients in everyday products pose real risks during pregnancy.
Your Thyroid Runs Your Pregnancy
The thyroid produces hormones that control fetal brain development, metabolism, and growth. Thyroid disruption during pregnancy is linked to lower IQ in children, ADHD, and developmental delays. Even small changes in thyroid function matter.
What You Can Do
Switch to fragrance-free, paraben-free, phthalate-free personal care products, especially during pregnancy. Read ingredient labels. Choose products with short, recognizable ingredient lists.
