Researchers tested rice from countries around the world. Every single sample contained detectable pesticide residues. Some had levels up to 242 micrograms per kilo.
A Global Picture of Contamination
Scientists analyzed rice samples from multiple countries for 43 insecticides, 17 fungicides, and 3 herbicides. All samples had detectable residues. The fungicide carbendazim was found in nearly every sample, according to a 2026 study in Environ Int.
Pakistan had the highest overall pesticide burden. Russia had the lowest. Within China, eastern and southern regions had higher contamination than western and northern areas. The biggest dietary risk came from lambda-cyhalothrin, profenofos, and chlorpyrifos.
20 Priority Chemicals Identified
The researchers went beyond just measuring levels. They cross-referenced the pesticides with toxicity data and found 20 priority chemicals that show bioactivity across multiple organ systems. These aren't just present in your rice. They're biologically active in your body.
Myanmar had the highest risk quotient, followed by Pakistan and India.
What You Can Do
Choose organic rice when possible. Rinse rice thoroughly and cook in excess water, then drain. Rotate between rice and other grains to reduce cumulative exposure. And check out non-toxic kitchen alternatives for safer food storage.
