Pesticides Are Draining Kids' Antioxidant Defenses

Children living near areas where pesticides are sprayed heavily have weakened antioxidant defenses. Their bodies are burning through protective antioxidants just trying to deal with the chemical exposure.
What the Study Found
A 2026 study in Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology tested children in a Mexican population living near pesticide-intensive agricultural areas. The researchers measured their antioxidant battery, the collection of enzymes and molecules that protect cells from damage.
The kids near pesticide use had measurable changes in their antioxidant systems. Their bodies were under oxidative stress, meaning the chemicals were creating more cell-damaging free radicals than their natural defenses could handle.
Why Kids Are Especially Vulnerable
Children breathe faster, eat more per pound of body weight, and play on the ground where pesticide residues settle. Their detoxification systems aren't fully developed yet. So the same exposure that an adult might handle puts a much bigger burden on a child's body.
When your antioxidant defenses are depleted as a kid, the damage accumulates. It sets the stage for chronic diseases later in life.
What You Can Do
If you live near farms, keep kids indoors during spray season. Wash produce carefully. Feed them antioxidant-rich foods like berries, leafy greens, and citrus fruits. And advocate for buffer zones between agricultural spray areas and residential neighborhoods.
