PET Microplastics Are Causing Erectile Dysfunction

The plastic from your water bottle may be causing erectile dysfunction. PET microplastics trigger an immune response that damages the blood vessels needed for erections.

What the Study Found

A 2026 study found that PET microplastics impair erectile function through macrophage-mediated cGAS-STING ferroptosis. That's a chain reaction: microplastics activate immune cells (macrophages), which trigger a DNA-sensing pathway (cGAS-STING), which causes iron-driven cell death (ferroptosis) in penile tissue.

PET plastic is in water bottles, soda bottles, food containers, and polyester clothing. It sheds microparticles that enter your body through food, water, and air.

What You Can Do

Ditch plastic water bottles. Use glass or stainless steel. Avoid PET food containers. Filter your water. If you're experiencing erectile dysfunction, environmental chemical exposure may be worth discussing with your doctor.
