PFAS has been found in follicular fluid, the liquid surrounding eggs in the ovary. And it disrupts reproductive hormones differently depending on whether it's measured in the fluid or in blood.

What the Study Found

A 2026 study from the Chinese IVF cohort GIVES found differential associations of PFAS in follicular fluid versus serum with reproductive hormones. PFAS in follicular fluid had different (and in some cases stronger) effects on hormones than PFAS in blood serum.

Follicular fluid directly surrounds the developing egg. PFAS contamination here means the chemical is in direct contact with your future baby at the earliest possible stage.

What You Can Do

If you're undergoing IVF or trying to conceive, reduce PFAS exposure. Filter water. Avoid nonstick cookware and stain-resistant products. Every reduction in PFAS exposure may improve reproductive outcomes.
