PFAS are still in your food packaging. And measuring them accurately is harder than you'd think.

Measuring Forever Chemicals in Wrappers

A 2026 study in Food Addit Contam assessed methods for reliably measuring total organic fluorine in food packaging materials. Total organic fluorine is a marker for PFAS contamination. The study worked to improve detection so we can actually know which packaging is contaminated.

PFAS are used in food packaging to resist grease and moisture. Think microwave popcorn bags, fast food wrappers, pizza boxes, and takeout containers. The chemicals migrate from the packaging into your food, especially when the food is hot or greasy.

What You Can Do

Avoid greasy fast food packaging. Transfer food to glass or ceramic containers before reheating. Skip microwave popcorn bags. Cook at home. Browse non-toxic kitchen alternatives for PFAS-free food storage.
