PFOS was detected in every single fish sample. All 186 of them. Across 15 species. There is no PFAS-free fish.

186 Samples, 100% Detection

A 2026 study in Mar Pollut Bull tested 186 fish samples from 10 marine and 5 freshwater species popular in Chinese diets. PFOS was found in every sample, with median concentrations ranging from 0.058 to 1.71 ng/g wet weight.

Six long-chain PFCAs and an emerging PFAS compound (6:2 Cl-PFESA) were also detected in over 80% of samples.

60% of Species Exceed Safety Limits

For people who eat fish frequently, 60% of species had hazard ratios above 1. That means regular consumption of most of these fish poses a measurable health risk from PFAS alone.

Low-frequency fish eaters were under the threshold. But if fish is a staple of your diet, you're getting enough PFAS to matter.

Despite Strict Regulations

This contamination persists despite PFOS being regulated and restricted. The chemical doesn't break down. It's been accumulating in waterways and fish for decades, and it shows no signs of going away.

What You Can Do

Vary your protein sources. Don't eat the same fish species every day. Choose smaller, shorter-lived species. And use non-toxic kitchen alternatives for cooking to avoid adding more PFAS from cookware.

Also see glass food containers for safer alternatives.
