PFAS Are in the Swedish Food Supply Too

It's not just American food. PFAS are contaminating the food supply in Sweden too, and a new study mapped out the exposure.
PFAS Throughout the Swedish Diet
A 2026 study in Environ Pollut measured PFAS levels in food consumed by the Swedish population and estimated overall dietary exposure. The findings: PFAS are present across multiple food categories, meaning there's no single food to avoid. The contamination is systemic.
Fish and seafood tend to carry the highest levels, but PFAS also show up in dairy, eggs, meat, and drinking water. The study calculated total dietary exposure and compared it to safety thresholds set by the European Food Safety Authority.
Why This Matters Globally
Sweden has some of the strictest environmental regulations in the world. If PFAS are this widespread in Swedish food, the situation is likely worse in countries with less regulation. The chemicals come from contaminated water, food packaging, and agricultural inputs. They're everywhere.
What You Can Do
Vary your protein sources. Filter your drinking water. Avoid PFAS-treated food packaging (microwave popcorn bags, fast food wrappers). Cook at home with fresh ingredients when possible. Browse non-toxic kitchen alternatives for PFAS-free cookware and storage.
