PFAS and Metals Are Weakening Kids' Immune Systems

Kids exposed to PFAS and heavy metals have altered antibody levels. Their immune systems aren't responding like they should.
Chemical Exposure Changes Immune Response
A 2026 study in Environ Epidemiol measured PFAS exposure in mid-childhood and metal exposure in early childhood, then checked antibody titers (immune markers) in the same children. The associations were clear: chemical exposure was linked to altered antibody levels.
Antibodies are your immune system's targeted weapons against infections. If chemicals are suppressing or altering antibody production in children, it means vaccines may work less well and kids may be more vulnerable to infections.
PFAS Are Known Immune Suppressors
PFAS have been linked to reduced vaccine effectiveness in children in multiple studies. The chemicals appear to suppress the immune response, leaving kids less protected even after vaccination. Add early heavy metal exposure on top of that, and the immune system takes a double hit during its most critical development period.
What You Can Do
Filter your water for both PFAS and metals. Avoid nonstick cookware and stain-resistant products. Test your home for lead. Dust and clean regularly. Check out non-toxic baby products to protect your child's developing immune system.
