PFOA Causes Miscarriage by Poisoning Immune Cells With Ammonia

Researchers discovered a completely new way PFOA causes miscarriage. It traps ammonia inside immune cells in the placenta, crippling their ability to support pregnancy.

A New Pathway to Miscarriage

A 2026 study in Advanced Science found that PFOA exposure disrupts macrophages (immune cells) in the uterus by causing them to retain ammonia. This ammonia buildup damages the lysosomes inside these cells, which are essential for proper immune function.

With dysfunctional lysosomes, macrophages can't secrete cathepsin B properly. This reduces macrophage infiltration into the placenta and blocks trophoblast invasion, the process where placental cells burrow into the uterine wall to establish blood supply. Without proper trophoblast invasion, pregnancy fails.

The Molecular Chain Reaction

PFOA flips a molecular switch. It downregulates a protein called ID3, which lets a transcription factor called TCF12 enter the nucleus and activate glutaminase (GLS). GLS breaks down glutamine into glutamate and ammonia. The ammonia builds up because the cell can't clear it fast enough. Everything downstream breaks.

PFOA Is in Nearly Everyone

PFOA has been detected in the blood of 98%+ of Americans tested. It comes from nonstick cookware, food packaging, stain-resistant coatings, and contaminated water. Even though it's been phased out of production in the US, it persists in the environment and in human bodies for years.

How to Reduce Risk

If you're planning pregnancy, reduce PFOA exposure now. Filter your water. Replace nonstick pans. Avoid greaseproof packaging. Browse non-toxic baby products for a safer pregnancy.
